How do you connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller to a computer?

I've seen people with wired controllers plugged into a computer and run but all of my 360 controllers are wireless. I've installed the driver to run the controllers but they do not respond to my computer. I've used the charger cable to connect but it just keeps going to my 360 and not my computer. Is there a way to use a wireless controller on a computer? How do you connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller to a computer?
The play-and-charge cable will only charge the controller -- it doesn't transfer any gaming information.

To use a wireless 360 controller on the PC, you need to be using XP with Service Pack 2 or later, Vista with Service Pack 1 or later, or Windows 7 and you also have to buy the Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. How do you connect a wireless Xbox 360 controller to a computer?
