How to set up a wireless network in this case?

I have a laptop(vista) with built in wireless and a desktop (xp, no wireless adapter or built in wireless) attached with cable internet

I want to buy a wireless router in order to share the internet for both my laptop and desktop. Which brand and type is best for me?

Do I need a wireless adapter for my desktop?

How would you set up this network? (it's ok if the desktop maintains wired!)

You will need a wireless adapter for the desktop if you want to connect wirelessly.

Also, It is ok for one to be wired and the other to be wireless.

It's fairly easy. Check out this website. How to set up a wireless network in this case?
Many wireless routers also accept CAT 5 connections, if you get one of these you can wire the desktop in and use wireless on the other.
your desktop needs a wireless internet card if it doesnt already have one, but thats kinda pointless because you can simply buy a wireless router, and plug your modem into that.

from there, you can still plug your desktop into a port on the wireless router (which is still connected to your router, maintaining a wired network.

the wireless router will still send out wifi signals, so your laptop will work too.
You can buy any router, the main-brand ones are good, Netgear, Belkin, etc etc. It doesn't really matter. You can keep your Desktop wired to the router (wireless router) and use the laptop to connect to it wirelessly. To do this;

1. Replace your router with the new wireless one.

2. Connect it to your PC/Desktop via Ethernet cable.

3. Log onto router and edit your internet account settings.

4. Change your WiFi WPA Key for the router.

5. Enter WPA-Key, with laptop when trying to connect

6. Wallah, should be good to go.

P.S. Cable internet. (just noticed) You'll plug your modem directly into the router. Router into Desktop.
