How exactly does a wireless card work with a laptop?

There are two varieties of wireless cards available. The first is a network card, which will allow you to wirelessly connect to a home or office network. These would require an access point to connect to, such as a wireless router. Normally, you'd set up a cable modem, then feed it into the wireless router, and connect your laptop using that access point.



The second card is a wireless internet card, which downloads and uploads from a 3G network. These run based on cell tower availability, and are normally sold by your cell phone service provider. They're typically more expensive, but offer you more options for roaming. These do not require an access point.

For wireless to work you need a wireless device in your laptop AND a wireless router (or wireless modem).



Before you buy a wireless card check to make sure if your laptop already has one fitted internally. Nearly all laptops sold in the past 3 years already have one inside.



The only exception to this is if you get a mobile wireless card. This does not use your home internet connection. It uses the high speed mobile phone network instead. This costs extra per month of course.



If you just want wireless at your home, then buy a wireless router and connect it to your modem.
