First make sure you installed the software/drivers before you inserted the card. Really when problems like this happen it is usually because there is not enough power going through the actual card. In my desktop pc I had to replace my Power Supply because it was not pumping enough power into my hardware. Unfortunately your on a laptop and can't do that. How to make invisible a wireless network?
I have a Netgear Rangemax wireless router that I want to make an invisible network with. At the store the woman called it ';stealth'; but I've found neither of these things on the Netgear website nor in the settings for the router.

Double check the placement of your router in the house. Make sure it is set on a shelf high off the ground and away from the modem. Also check for any possible interference that could be affecting the router. Cell phones, microwaves, thick walls, and doors could be affecting the transmission. I would try moving the router and see if that makes a difference. I had to move mine and I haven't had a problem since. Good luck.

You may have accidentally bumped your wireless networking key, this is located around or on your keyboard. Most notebooks will have this button located above the keyboard. You need to add security to your connection, to do this you need to go into your router settings from one of your computers.
To do this you need to type in the local IP address of your router in your internet browser, this is usually something like : ';192.168.0.1';. if you are unsure of the address you need to either locate the manual for your router if you bought it, or call up your internet service provider if they supplied you with the router.
once you have the IP address, type it into your internet browser and it will ask you for a username and password. Most of these default to
Username:admin
Password:password
this information would be located in the user manual or on the back of the router itself. After you find it then you should make sure you change the password to something else in the router menu after logging in for extra security.
Once you are logged into your router settings you need to find the tab to add a secure password onto your network, this is different for every router but it is easy to find once you have logged in, make sure you choose a 128 bit security over a 64 bit one if possible.
After this is done make sure you save your settings in the tab provided if there is one and then log out. now click on your connection on windows and press connect, type in the password and click save, it should connect and you will not need to type it in again.

You will also need the installation disk that came with your wireless adapter and insert it into the optical drive when requested.

If NDISWrapper doe not work for you check the Ubuntu forums the folks there are very helpful.

Do you have the box the adapter card came in? If you do, you need to check that box and see if it lists compatible operating systems. Many wireless cards only work with certain Windows systems or Windows and Mac. Or you can look the name of the card up online and see what systems it works with.
If that's not an issue, then did a disk come with the card that has the drivers you need to install for the card to work? If so, you need to put that disk in the CD-ROM drive, go to wherever you go on Linux to add new hardware and search for the drivers on that disk. If not, I suggest you do an internet search for the drivers by typing in the name of your adapter card and ';driver'; so you can download the drivers.

Remove the slot plug from the case and Install the card in the open PCI slot and screw it in. Line the card up and go from back to front on the install. Sometimes the cards plug catches on the case if so just push the bottom of the card plug in with your finger.
Make sure it is seated in its slot and level across the top. Then screw in the antenna to the card and plug it back in and start it up if you need to install the drivers from the manufactures CD. You question is a little vague so I'm going assume that either there is wireless internet where you live. (Such as an apartment/condo) or you had someone hook up a wireless in you home. To connect to it, you will need a PCI wireless adapter, these go into you computer into one of empty slots inside. Since I don't have more information I would have to suggest you go with the Wireless N standard since it is the current standard and is backwards compatible. You can usually pick these up at Best Buy, and they can also install it for you if you don't trust your self to do it.
I suggest this over a USB because they are usually faster and don't have to run through software before the data is usable by the computer.

Yes there is outdoor power outlets, but you can still secure your network work AES encryption just like wireless. You get 5 bars no matter where you are in the house. Interference is a non factor for the vast majority of situations. If interference is a problem, there a noise filters you can buy. When there is interference with wireless, there's not much you can do.

How do you get wireless internet service so you can use internet on laptop away from home?
What are my options for using laptop away from home and having internet service to do so? Do i subscribe to a certain service? How does this work? How can i set up windows to manage my wireless network connections when i have belkin software installed?

I have a Belkin Wireless G 125HSM router and am using a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adaptor to connect to my router. Currently i am using the Belkin Wireless Monitor software that came with my USB network adaptor to manage my internet connection however i would like to use the windows Wireless Network Manager to do this.
When i try to view any wireless connections using the windows wireless network manager i get a message telling me that Windows Zero Configuration (WZC) must be enabled to use the facility.
Does anyone have any information on configuring WZC and setting up my pc to enable me to use windows to manage my wireless connections?

Yes, genius! And a total round about way of getting the job done! Spend 20 minutes on this or five on the options described below... also, this fails to remove the Wireless Card's add in program, so one little glitch and it's back on and in charge... but, hey, whatever works!
Uninstall the belkin software but not the drivers. Then when the software is uninstalled, windows will take over wireless management.
when i done it i wet in to network connections,set up a new network,select connection ,should prompt for software,insert cd install it once it's installed to connect you device you have to enter a wep key,this is usually found on the wireless modem,it's easier than it sounds as long as you are running windows xp,hope this helps good luck

nothing else needed- assuming both are wifi enabled,
the following assumes that each of the laptops are already connected to the router via wifi
on each macine ensure that they are both members of the same network- go to control panel%26gt;system%26gt;computer name%26gt;network id. make your changes and reboot.
now go to the root of the hard drives via my computer and selec the folders that you want to share- right click on them and select sharing and security.
Turn off any firewalls, the xp firewall can be left on.
now on the other machine goto start%26gt;my network places and select the drives
to share a printer, connect it to one machine, go to the other and then goto start%26gt;printers and faxes, add a printer,%26gt;select the network printer option and then select browse until yo find it.
now when you want to print just make sure the laptop with the printer attached is turned on

I have a desktop for the house. My daughter has purchased a Dell Ispiron 1501 laptop. We bought a Netgear Wireless-G Router (WGR614) which came w/ no instructions. My question is this: the router came w/ an instillation cd %26amp; i need to know do i load the cd to my desktop or to the laptop OR to both of them?
I believe that i have to connect the cord that came w/ the router to the cable modem (in the ethernet port) %26amp; the other end into the router.

Yes, this is possible and relatively straight forward:
1. You'll need a cross-over cable (or a switch) between the ethernet ports of the computers.
2. You'll need to create on both computers static IP configurations for the ethernet ports in a subnet that is separate from the wireless subnet (e.g. 192.168.99.1 on the laptop and 192.168.99.2 on the desktop if wireless is 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x). In the desktop configuration, use the laptops ethernet IP address as the gateway.

My family has one wireless router upstairs, but it doesn't really reach the basement very well in order to allow me to play Xbox Live. In your house, that's the wireless router. Unfortunately, wireless signals don't flow all that well vertically, which is why basement reception is so poor.
What you need is something called a repeater, also known as a range expander. You configure it and then plug it somewhere midway between the router and the basement. The repeater picks up the wireless signal, cleans it up and boosts it, and then retransmits it so you will get better reception in the basement.
We have exactly the same situation in our house, wireless upstairs and PS3 in basement, and the repeater has made an enormous difference.How do I set up a second wireless router in my home?
