How do you make a wireless laptop card work?

i installed a wireless laptop care on my computer but the card won't turn on. os there any way to make it work? How do you make a wireless laptop card work?
First make sure you installed the software/drivers before you inserted the card. Really when problems like this happen it is usually because there is not enough power going through the actual card. In my desktop pc I had to replace my Power Supply because it was not pumping enough power into my hardware. Unfortunately your on a laptop and can't do that. Possibly try asking your manufacture if they could make it more powerful. How do you make a wireless laptop card work?
Install the the driver for it then it will work.

How to make invisible a wireless network?

I have a Netgear Rangemax wireless router that I want to make an invisible network with. At the store the woman called it ';stealth'; but I've found neither of these things on the Netgear website nor in the settings for the router.

How do I do this? Do I need a different device? Replace the firmware? How to make invisible a wireless network?
Start with turning off the SSID, but remember what it is so you can connect yourself. That stops the broadcast of the wireless ID. It's not 100%, but does hide the wireless from 99% of the people out there. hackers will still find it...you need good wireless security regardless....How to make invisible a wireless network?
The lady at the store was talking imaginary nonsense. There is no stealth setting. Disabling SSID is not a security feature. It is a myth.

SSID cannot really be hidden. Anyone capable of running a simple downloaded tool can easily discover it.

It is sent in clear form in every beacon, probe, re/association frame from either the access point or clients. What actually happens is the efficency of the network is decreased by additional squawk and SSID is put out on the air more frequently overall. The reverse of setting out to make a network less 'visible'.

Instead you enable the best real security the product has and go with that and don't take security advice from idiot store clerks.
There is no way to make it invisible. Turning off SSID broadcast only takes away the constant emitting of the name of your network. The router still continues to broadcast this ID which is easily picked up. Just secure it with atleast WPA and a strong pass (more than 10characters and not a dictionary word)
You just need to disable the broadcasting of the ssid. Check out the manual here http://74.125.113.132/search?q=cache:Y84鈥?/a>

just do a search for SSID and it should point you in the right direction.

Hope this helps.
Disable the SSID broadcast.

How can I connect my laptop to a wireless capable printer?

I have a desktop that is Windows XP connected to a Kodak All in One printer, ESP 5. I have a HP laptop that runs Windows Vista. I have a wireless router from my phone company that I allows me to connect to the internet on both computers. So how can I get my laptop to print to my printer? Or do I need to break down and buy another wireless router? How can I connect my laptop to a wireless capable printer?
Share the printer from Windows XP desktop machine. Or setup the printer to be wireless following the wireless instructions that came with it.How can I connect my laptop to a wireless capable printer?
Your printer allows you to print from a Bluetooth device, using an optional Kodak USB Bluetooth dongle, which you can purchase from Kodak at www.kodak.com/go/accessories. Bluetooth allows wireless connectivity between compatible electronic devices.

So it looks as though your printer does not have a wireless connection built-in and bluetooth will not connect to your wireless router anyway. what you need is a mini print server such as this

This plugs into your router and connects to the USB port of the printer

If you want a wireless print server then choose on of these

Alternatively you can connect the printer to one of the computers and ';share'; it across the network. Here is a link to printer sharing

WEll u can confight the routers wireless setting if you hav a earthanet cable and connect it to router . and into a browser and type a serise of numbers that is said on the manual.

Then detect the network normall via wireless
The physical arrangement is:

1. ISP Modem which provides an Ethernet feed.

2. Router which takes the Ethernet feed from modem into its WAN port and provides a wired LAN Port feed to a network switch.

3. A network switch which is linked via wired cat 5 line to router LAN port and linked via wired cat 5 lines to wired LAN pcs and wireless access points.

4. A wireless access point which provides wireless broadcast to wireless LAN appliances.

5. Wireless equiped LAN appliances (e.g. notebooks with wireless adapters, desktops with wireless adapters, etc).

Some routers integrate a router and small network switch (4 ports) into one device. If you have this, you may not need a switch.

Some routers integrate a router, small network switch, and wireless access point into one device. If you have this you may not need a switch OR a wireless access point.

Some ISPs integrate the modem, router, small network switch, and wireless access point into one device. If you hav this you may not need a router, switch, or wireless access point.

Check first to see what you have and from there, purchase what you need.

Now you must configure the router and wireless to communicate as the manuals will direct you. You must use a wired link to the LAN to configure wireless access point and router. Even if the notebook will be wirelessly used later, configure things with a wired link - and make future changes with a wired link.

If your notebook has a built in wireless port already, you need no new software to link it wirelessly (but you must configure it). If your notebook has no wireless port, you will need to purchase a wireless adapter and install and confugure it. Most notebooks today come with wireless but not all do.

How can I make a wireless router work?

I want to hook up another computer to the internet. I have one already connected via a cable modem, and my provider told me that I would need a wireless router to give another computer access. What would I need to do to achieve this? How can I make a wireless router work?
It's easy. Buy the router. On the back of the router there should be several plugs -- most labeled ';LAN'; and one labeled ';WAN';. Disconnect the wire that goes from your cable modem to your computer and instead connect it from the cable modem to the WAN port on your router. Then take a new wire and connect it from the LAN port on the router to your computer. Each remaining LAN port on the router can be used to connect an additional device. If you want Wireless, just turn it on or off in the router control panel (usually located at http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 -- see your router manual for details/passwords)How can I make a wireless router work?
buy one, follow manual. Routers are not all the same. some use a so called easy setup CD, Some make you enter a number into your web bar to configure it. you will also most likely need a usb device for the new comp so it will recieve the signal and work.

How To Ping From a Wireless Computer to a Wired Computer using a Linksys Router?

I want to be able to ping and connect to my downstairs computer. Currently I am using a wireless laptop, which is connected wirelessly to my Linksys router. My downstairs computer is directly connected to the same router. How do I ping the downstairs computer? How To Ping From a Wireless Computer to a Wired Computer using a Linksys Router?
Ping (IP Address of downstairs computer)

If you are on the same network you should be able to ping. Check the IP address of both machines. If the subnet mask is for instance 255.255.255.0 and the first three octets of the IP address on both machines are the same they are on the same network.

IE if your downstairs machine is 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 and your upstairs machine is 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0 they are on the same subnet and ping should work. Wireless is just a layer 1/2 technology and can be thought of as just another way of connecting. It should not affect ping unless there is something blocking pings (IE a firewall on the downstairs machine, a feature in the Linksys ).How To Ping From a Wireless Computer to a Wired Computer using a Linksys Router?
First off, you need to go to your wireless router page, probably ';192.168.1.1'; but it may be something else. then go to your wan settings, and make sure you have the router set to respond to pings. then, i suggest you go to your dhcp and make at least your desktop have a reserved ip address. Then take that ip address and use it to ping form your laptop. it should work whether or not you use your global ip address, or your local one.

How do I secure my wireless internet connection?

I want to secure my wireless internet connection so that I can set a password and other people won't be able to use my internet. How do I do this? How do I secure my wireless internet connection?
You'll need to adjust the settings on your wireless router. Usually, this is done using a web-browser like IE, Firefox, etc. You enter the router's IP address (which will be 192.168.0.1 or something like that) in the browser and an interface appears that lets you change the settings. Hopefully, you have a manual for the router, or can download one from the manufacturer's website. That will give you the specific instructions.

If your wireless router and computer support it, you should choose WPA2 wireless security, or at least WPA. WEP is better than nothing and will prevent a casual neighbor from accessing your network, but anyone even halfway serious can crack a WEP password in a few seconds, using easily obtained software.

Use a password that doesn't appear in a dictionary. (Passphrases, e.g., ';thequickbrownfox'; are good and easy to remember.) Better still, include numbers and both upper- and lower-case letters. How do I secure my wireless internet connection?
Ask your nearest internet provider and put into detail what you want,

It is as simple as that.
You just need a good Internet access provider, like Clear, which I have started using in the Portland area. They should have it in your area soon too. The connection will always be secure, and it's more fast and convenient than any other Internet access I've used. I highly suggest it...and it's pretty affordable.

I have a netgear router and I had a similar problem. I used to reset the router and sometimes I would reset the modem. That helped for awhile. The connection would come back and be fine. Double check the placement of your router in the house. Make sure it is set on a shelf high off the ground and away from the modem. Also check for any possible interference that could be affecting the router. Cell phones, microwaves, thick walls, and doors could be affecting the transmission. I would try moving the router and see if that makes a difference. I had to move mine and I haven't had a problem since. Good luck.
Return it to the store and buy a Linksys wireless router. I just switched and I am very happy now!

Of course I am assuming that you do not have the same problem when your computer is hard wired (because if you do, then it's the modem).

I work for T-Mobile, and setting up Blackberry (and other) handsets as modems is a big part of my job. I get this question a lot, and unfortunately, the answer is ';no.'; A BlackBerry cannot serve internet to a computer via wifi. It can be used as a modem to serve internet from your carrier's network, but it cannot serve internet from the wifi to your computer.

That said - you can get a wifi dongle that will plug into a USB port for very little money from just about any store that sells computer accessories; it should come with the drivers you'll need to get it to work. I have one for my desktop (using cable would mean I'd have to run wires all over my house), and I think I paid all of about $25 US for it from Tiger Direct.

Turning on your microwave may also kill your wireless connection. I think your issue is probably just low signal strength - a weak connection to your wireless router. Try removing things from in between your computer and your wireless router. Avoid putting the laptop or xbox between your computer and wireless router. Make sure that all of the antennas are pointing straight up. They need to be parallel to each other for the best connection.

There are many factors that determine the performance of a wifi. See for example this page which talks about wifi access points, but stuff like bandwidth, path loss, delay spread, sensitivity and others apply the same way.

    http://www.maxi-pedia.com/how+to+choose+the+right+wireless+router

To make the story short, decide what standard (speed) you want to go with. Unless you really need a loooot of bandwidth, I would go with 802.11g. This gives you plenty of bandwidth. See here for more details http://www.maxi-pedia.com/IEEE+Wireless+Wi-Fi+networking+802.11+standards

The next most important factor is the sensitivity. This is not easy to research. Reviews are the best resources. Do your research on Amazon, CNET, etc.

well, from your modem you need to get a wireless router or access point.

i'd say so you don't have to set up the extra stuff you should get an access point. you plus the cat5 cable coming from your (im guessing dsl modem?) into your acess point. you should have a wifi signal coming from that access point. from that ap you need to log in to it by conneting onto its factor wifi network and type in the ip address given to you by the manual and then use the factory defaulted user name and password to configure it. for the most part you don't need to to do the extra stuff, BUT, you should protect your network

The PS3 does not come with a ';playtech wireless six controller';, that is a third party controller, which requires a USB dongle in order to use (all third party controllers require a dongle).

If you don't have the USB dongle that came with the controller, you will not be able to use the controller. Here is the controller, and you can see the USB dongle in the packaging below the controller: http://www.gameexpress.com/product_detai鈥?/a>

Only the Sony PS3 controller works wirelessly without any additional devices (PS3 controllers don't need a USB dongle, because Sony knows their own system).

If you need a controller, you will need the USB dongle, or you will need to go buy a PS3 controller (or another third party controller).

Connect a Laptop to a Wireless Router Using a Windows Operating System

    Step 1

Purchase a wireless router that fits your needs and price range.

    Step 2

Follow the router's manual to set up the router and its Internet connection, which will probably require connecting a wired client to the router. Once the wireless router is set up, the wired connection is no longer necessary. However, it's best to leave the wired client connected if it's a separate computer from that on which you're going to set up WiFi. If something goes wrong, you can access the administration interface again.

    Step 3

Gather information from the setup process. In order to set up the wireless client, you will need to know the service set identifier (SSID), the Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) key and the channel and mode.

    Step 4

Boot up the laptop and plug in the WiFi card. This will not be necessary if your laptop has an integrated WiFi card.

    Step 5

Install any drivers needed to use the WiFi card. Insert the disc that came with the WiFi card and follow the on-screen installation process. Most discs will trigger a new hardware wizard that makes installation extremely simple.

    Step 6

Double-click on the ';WiFi Connection'; icon. It can be found in the system tray at the bottom of the laptop screen.

    Step 7

    Click on ';Properties.';

    Step 8

    Select the ';Wireless Networks'; tab.

    Step 9

Use the ';Add'; button at the bottom of the dialog if your WiFi network isn't in the ';Available Networks'; section.

    Step 10

    Click on ';Configure'; when you see your network's SSID in the ';Available Networks.';

    Step 11

Enter your network's SSID and WEP key.

    Step 12

Click on ';Start,'; then choose ';Connect To'; and ';Wireless Network Connection.'; Your computer should now be able to access the WiFi network. If the WiFi network is connected to the Internet, it should also be able to connect to the Internet.

    Hope this helps.

You need to add security to your connection, to do this you need to go into your router settings from one of your computers.

To do this you need to type in the local IP address of your router in your internet browser, this is usually something like : ';192.168.0.1';. if you are unsure of the address you need to either locate the manual for your router if you bought it, or call up your internet service provider if they supplied you with the router.

once you have the IP address, type it into your internet browser and it will ask you for a username and password. Most of these default to

    Username:admin

    Password:password

this information would be located in the user manual or on the back of the router itself. After you find it then you should make sure you change the password to something else in the router menu after logging in for extra security.

Once you are logged into your router settings you need to find the tab to add a secure password onto your network, this is different for every router but it is easy to find once you have logged in, make sure you choose a 128 bit security over a 64 bit one if possible.

After this is done make sure you save your settings in the tab provided if there is one and then log out. now click on your connection on windows and press connect, type in the password and click save, it should connect and you will not need to type it in again.

    Hi There,

If Ubuntu can not find a driver you will need to run the NDISWrapper utility and follow the directions carefully.

You will also need the installation disk that came with your wireless adapter and insert it into the optical drive when requested.

NDISWrapper is a utility that can install the windows drivers into Ubuntu and make them work.

If NDISWrapper doe not work for you check the Ubuntu forums the folks there are very helpful.

    Hope this has helped,

You don't say what the problem is, i.e. what you've done up to this point to try to install it or if you've tried to install it but it's not working.

Do you have the box the adapter card came in? If you do, you need to check that box and see if it lists compatible operating systems. Many wireless cards only work with certain Windows systems or Windows and Mac. Or you can look the name of the card up online and see what systems it works with.

If that's not an issue, then did a disk come with the card that has the drivers you need to install for the card to work? If so, you need to put that disk in the CD-ROM drive, go to wherever you go on Linux to add new hardware and search for the drivers on that disk. If not, I suggest you do an internet search for the drivers by typing in the name of your adapter card and ';driver'; so you can download the drivers.

    - type in 191.168.1.1 into your address bar

    - password and user name will come up, should be admin for user name and admin for password

    - next click on the black tab that says wireless

    - then click on blue tab that says ';something'; security and your password should be either where it says shared key or passpharse or something

    - just try those things as the password, one of them should work

    - if this doesnt work call the support line, they should be able to help.
    Try 'admin'.

Or go to the web page of the manufacturer of the router %26amp; find out what the default password is - then change it.

How do you insert a wireless internet card into your computer tower?

I have an Alienware computer that I need to put a wireless internet card in and I have no idea how to do it and dont want to have to pay to get it installed. Thanks for your help! How do you insert a wireless internet card into your computer tower?
If it is a PCI wireless card you need the slot open on the motherboard for it.

Shut down your computer and unplug the computer from the tower. Press the power button one more time to release any stored any electricity then open the case.

With the case laying on the floor and the bottom of the box facing you you will see white slots these are PCI slots. Remove the slot plug from the case and Install the card in the open PCI slot and screw it in. Line the card up and go from back to front on the install. Sometimes the cards plug catches on the case if so just push the bottom of the card plug in with your finger.

Make sure it is seated in its slot and level across the top. Then screw in the antenna to the card and plug it back in and start it up if you need to install the drivers from the manufactures CD. If all goes well put the case back together and let it find your wireless connection. How do you insert a wireless internet card into your computer tower?

How do I connect a non-wireless PC to a wireless Mac network?

I would suggest going ahead and buying a AirPort Extreme or at least an AirPort Express base station in order to create your wireless LAN.

Using the Computer-to-Computer network feature is not something you want to rely on for a long term solution on any platform whether it be Apple or Windows platform.

You'll also have to buy WiFi adapters for the two non-wireless PCs. I suggest that you get adapters that are 802.11n compliant, since the AirPort Extreme or Express both support it in addition to G and B if you like. How do I connect a non-wireless PC to a wireless Mac network?

Ask them to connect it at the shop. If they're unwilling to, connect it at home and ensure a return-policy on unfunctioning goods.

Simply ask them to connect it, remove all network security protocols, and connect to it with your laptop!

Other things to check are the range of the router, signal strength, and physical condition. How to check if a wireless router is in good working condition ?
One thing you can do is ask a neighbor who already uses a wireless router. Another solution can be to buy the router, follow the instructions carefully, and it should work. If it does not work, connect the router to a different computer in your home. Make sure the other computer is in a different room of the house. One other thing, wireless routers sometimes need boosters to be able to get the signal around your home, business, etc.
Most routers are very reliable and rarely fail but when they do, it will be hard to determine because it may work well when tested but fail when tested for a time duration.

Make sure that they offer a at least a 10 return policy.
Are you not able to check them on your laptop?

How easy is it to make a laptop wireless?

I am looking to buy a laptop and have a wireless router at home, how easy is it to make the laptop wireless? Thanks in advance. How easy is it to make a laptop wireless?
If you buy a laptop, it will most likely have the wireless card already installed. In that case, since you already have a wireless network set up, getting the laptop connected should be nearly as easy as falling out of bed...

When you turn the laptop on, it should auto-detect wireless networks and give a bubble pop-up saying that it found networks. Click the bubble, choose your network, and you should be able to get connected just fine.

Note: Home wireless networks should be secured to prevent undesired visitors. Not only will other people using your network slow it down for you, it could also become a legal issue if they are doing anything illegal, because it will trace back to you. Make sure you encrypt the network. The manual or documentation for your wireless router should tell how to do this, if you have not done it already. How easy is it to make a laptop wireless?
    very easy

all laptop are now built with a wireless modem so you just turn it on and the wireless modem will connect with your router

If you router is protected with WEP encryption, you need to keyin those secret codes first
As easy as buying a wireless card/adapter and a wireless router. Setup is quite easy too.
its very easy as long as you buy a laptop with wireless on it! and then you set it up and it will pick up signal and away you go!
yeh sure it is very easy, as long as you have a slot in the side of the laptop to insert an adapter, the adapter is a little larger than a credit card, you should get a disk with it, put the disk in first and just follow the instructions it will tell you when to insert the card and just leave it in the slot.
You can get a USB wireless thing and connect it to the computer.

You question is a little vague so I'm going assume that either there is wireless internet where you live. (Such as an apartment/condo) or you had someone hook up a wireless in you home. To connect to it, you will need a PCI wireless adapter, these go into you computer into one of empty slots inside. Since I don't have more information I would have to suggest you go with the Wireless N standard since it is the current standard and is backwards compatible. You can usually pick these up at Best Buy, and they can also install it for you if you don't trust your self to do it.

I suggest this over a USB because they are usually faster and don't have to run through software before the data is usable by the computer.

    http://broadband-internet.howlearn.ws/
Well my recommendation certainly isn't the cheapest option, but I do not recommend wireless. I recommend powerline instead. Powerline is sometimes inconvenient with laptops you want to carry around the house. However, you have a desktop computer which definitely does not need wireless.

Powerline takes care of 3 problems, security, signal strength, and signal interference. Yes there is outdoor power outlets, but you can still secure your network work AES encryption just like wireless. You get 5 bars no matter where you are in the house. Interference is a non factor for the vast majority of situations. If interference is a problem, there a noise filters you can buy. When there is interference with wireless, there's not much you can do.

Once you subscribe, the service provider can instruct you on how to use their service.

Also, if you are in an area with wifi hot spots, you could use those for internet service as well. Most likely it will be places like coffee shops, or bread stores (Like Panera). Of course, you would be limited to their operating hours.

Good luck! How do you get wireless internet service so you can use internet on laptop away from home?
You can also rent a mobile broadband card. Usually you have to sign up for a 2 year contract with a company but now they have a company that actually rents out the cards to you by the week or month. I have used this company before for travelling, check it out, it may work for you. www.wifirents.com

get a broadband card... it acts like a cell phone but you plug it in2 your computer
Go to any hot spot...or i beleive you can you some phones as your hot spot.
    You will have to use internet services from a coffee house, or any other similiar facility, or the best thing for you to do, would be to get satellite service, then you will be able to connect to the internet from just about anyplace. There is one downside, it is quite expensive, around $50 to $70 a month..Here is a website where you can read about it..Good Luck%26gt;%26gt;

    http://www.getisp.info/satellite-interne鈥?/a>
u must subscribe to the service
The wireless card in your laptop won't be sufficient...... You will need an additional wireless PCMCIA card that can be provided to you by whoever you get internet through. This will typically be based on a cell phone provider such as Verizon.... or T-Mobile....

    Let me recommend Verizon
You buy a Megooper Booper V6 from Radio Shack then you put it in the Computers Memory Giga Hard Drive and then you buy a TimeCard and a Sun Stone and then use it on the computer...ORRR You buy a Jizzangleglapper and buy a Jizzangleglapper dvd rom and then install the program and then you get free internet

How can i set up windows to manage my wireless network connections when i have belkin software installed?

    Hi all,

I have a Belkin Wireless G 125HSM router and am using a Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adaptor to connect to my router. Currently i am using the Belkin Wireless Monitor software that came with my USB network adaptor to manage my internet connection however i would like to use the windows Wireless Network Manager to do this.

When i try to view any wireless connections using the windows wireless network manager i get a message telling me that Windows Zero Configuration (WZC) must be enabled to use the facility.

Does anyone have any information on configuring WZC and setting up my pc to enable me to use windows to manage my wireless connections?

Thanks in advance for any answers provided! How can i set up windows to manage my wireless network connections when i have belkin software installed?
Belkin and some others are good at taking over the wireless configuration for windows.

To start the Wireless Zero Configuration service, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type %SystemRoot%\system32\services.msc /s, and then click OK.

    2. Double-click Wireless Zero Configuration.

    3. In the Startup type list, click Automatic, and then click Apply.

    4. In the Service status area, click Start, and then click OK.

That should take care of it. if you have any other question feel free to email me.

For some reason which i didnt see it is YAHOO removed part of the address from it and replaced it with ....after the \services there should be one . and msc. if you still cant figure it out drop me an email or IM me at jmoislhluear@yahoo.com

i put a space between every letter so yahoo wont remove the msc at the end hope that helpsHow can i set up windows to manage my wireless network connections when i have belkin software installed?
Yes, genius! And a total round about way of getting the job done! Spend 20 minutes on this or five on the options described below... also, this fails to remove the Wireless Card's add in program, so one little glitch and it's back on and in charge... but, hey, whatever works!

Uninstall the belkin software but not the drivers. Then when the software is uninstalled, windows will take over wireless management.
when i done it i wet in to network connections, set up a new network, select connection ,should prompt for software, insert cd install it once it's installed to connect you device you have to enter a wep key, this is usually found on the wireless modem,it's easier than it sounds as long as you are running windows xp,hope this helps good luck
You just need to reconfigure WZC to manage your wireless adapter. Just go to Control Panel | Wireless Connections and find your wireless network adapter. Right click on it and select properties. There should be three tabs on the properties screen - General, Wireless Connection, and Advanced. Select the Wireless Connection tab and there should be a small checkbox at the top of that screen that asks if you would like WZC to manage your wireless adapter. If there is no Wireless Connection tab available then your Belkin adapter may not function using WZC.

How do I set up wireless internet from my Ethernet cable at school?

At school they give us free wired internet but our current dorm suite doesnt have wireless. We know that others have set up wireless for theirs suites and so we plan to do that too (its only 5 small rooms) but I was wondering what I need. Do I just need a plain wireless router or something else? All our laptops already have built in wireless...

thanks! How do I set up wireless internet from my Ethernet cable at school?
All you need to do is plug your ethernet cable into a wireless router. I recommend NETGEAR (i think they're best one is a RangeMAX) but most other makes do the same job.

Your laptops then can connect to the wireless network which will use the internet connection via the router.

You should get a router set up for CABLE internet and not ADSL as you do not need the input for a phone line.

    quite easy to do

nothing else needed- assuming both are wifi enabled,

the following assumes that each of the laptops are already connected to the router via wifi

on each macine ensure that they are both members of the same network- go to control panel%26gt;system%26gt;computer name%26gt;network id. make your changes and reboot.

now go to the root of the hard drives via my computer and selec the folders that you want to share- right click on them and select sharing and security.

Turn off any firewalls, the xp firewall can be left on.

now on the other machine goto start%26gt;my network places and select the drives

to share a printer, connect it to one machine, go to the other and then goto start%26gt;printers and faxes, add a printer,%26gt;select the network printer option and then select browse until yo find it.

now when you want to print just make sure the laptop with the printer attached is turned on

    cheers

A wireless Cable/DSL router should be fine. When setting it up you may have to do your first configuration of the router with one of the laptops hooked up with a wire. Additionally you may also have to call your ISP to allow your new router through their firewall, so that you can access the internet.

There are some free hotspots, but it may take some doing.

Here in Illinois, the tollway oases have free hotspots. My local public library has free wi-fi access. McDonald's often have hotspots, but there is a charge. I havent checked out Starbuck's to see if they charge. How do I use wireless internet on my new laptop without paying?
You have to pay for wireless internet to be provided...

The only two ways I could think of having free internet is either owning a corporation which provides it and hence you pay yourself for Internet so it's free or you steal it from someone.

Wireless routers connect to a modem and act as a middle-man between the Internet and devices that connect to the Internet through wireless connections.
Go to a free wifi hotspot.
You find a public-access wi-fi spot. There are directories for such sites on the net - just search for it. When you find a place where this access exists, have your comp search for the signal. This presumes that you have a wireless adapter either plugged into your comp, or it is built in. Otherwise, you'll have to acquire one of those.

The Staples office-supply store, and Brookfields restaurant near my house have access for customers, as does the Flying J Truckstop.

Most ISP (cable) are easy to set up, the installation CD is usually used on the PC that can get online through the modem - pop it in and folloe instructions or you can try the following:

1.) Power off both modem and router.

2.) Plug the ethernet cable from your modem to the internet port of the router and one computer to one of the 4 ports (preferably the PC that's already wired to the modem using an ethernet cable).

3.)Power up modem, wait for the light to stabilize (or when ';online'; light is lit) - this indicates your modem has established communication to your ISP.

4.)Power up your router. Check if the wired PC is online no need for the installation CD.

Your wireless laptop should be able to detect and connect to your wireless network,

Oh yeah, some ISPs (partricularly most cable companies) need MAC cloning... if you still can't get online through the router but can with one of your computers when plugged in to the modem, try this:

1.)Connect the same PC that can get online through the modem to your router, go to the router's Setup page and look for the utility page where you can do a ';Mac Clone';.

    2.)Save your settings.

How do I bridge my ethernet and wireless on my laptop in Ubuntu?

I am setting up a new desktop, and it has an ethernet card. My laptop has wireless and ethernet. I can't find the desktop's USB, so I want to temporarily attach it to my laptop through ehternet and then use the wireless on the laptop to create a network bridge. They are both running Ubuntu 9.10. Is this possible to do?How do I bridge my ethernet and wireless on my laptop in Ubuntu?
Wow, that's a tough one. I'm not sure if that's possible. What I would try is to create a peer to peer connection and see if it works on Ubuntu. If it doesn't, I'm out of ideas. How do I bridge my ethernet and wireless on my laptop in Ubuntu?
Yes, this is possible and relatively straight forward:

    1. You'll need a cross-over cable (or a switch) between the ethernet ports of the computers.

    2. You'll need to create on both computers static IP configurations for the ethernet ports in a subnet that is separate from the wireless subnet (e.g. 192.168.99.1 on the laptop and 192.168.99.2 on the desktop if wireless is 192.168.0.x or 192.168.1.x). In the desktop configuration, use the laptops ethernet IP address as the gateway.

    3. On the laptop, you'll net to enable IP masquerading so that traffic from the ethernet port gets forwarded to the wireless port. Instructions for how to do that are here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Intern鈥?/a>

How can I connect my wireless Linksys to another wireless Linksys router?

the problem is they only have wireless access in the house, and I dont have a wireless card for my desktop-- i do have a wireless router however.. how can i connect the two to get internet access on my desktop? How can I connect my wireless Linksys to another wireless Linksys router?
You can't. Wireless routers by default, do not talk to each other, only to ';Clients';. There are routers made that will do various modes, but most box-store routers are not made for that mode.

There is some custom software that can turn a Linksys router to a ';AP Client';, but it is device specific. You cannot go back to being a regular ';Linksys'; once you convert the router to the custom DD-WRT software.

How do I set up a second wireless router in my home?

My family has one wireless router upstairs, but it doesn't really reach the basement very well in order to allow me to play Xbox Live. So now I have a 2nd router (Not wireless) and I plan on setting that up in the basement and connecting it to my Xbox via Ethernet. So how do I do this? I have already tried just plugging it all in and turning it on.How do I set up a second wireless router in my home?
No, you really can't do that. There has to be only one gateway system for your internal internet to access the outside world, and all traffic flows through that gateway. In your house, that's the wireless router. Unfortunately, wireless signals don't flow all that well vertically, which is why basement reception is so poor.

What you need is something called a repeater, also known as a range expander. You configure it and then plug it somewhere midway between the router and the basement. The repeater picks up the wireless signal, cleans it up and boosts it, and then retransmits it so you will get better reception in the basement.

We have exactly the same situation in our house, wireless upstairs and PS3 in basement, and the repeater has made an enormous difference. How do I set up a second wireless router in my home?
you could tap into the back of the first router or if u have a jack downstairs just plug it in there(only if your house is wired) if not try to call you cable/internet service and see what they can do
