How do I get wireless internet on my computer?

I have a PC connected to the net (This one) and an Xbox 360, Wii etc connected to it. I have a Wireless BT Home hub which is wireless.

How do I get another PC halfway across my house, connected to the Home hub?How do I get wireless internet on my computer?
If your PC does not have wireless you will need to buy either a USB wifi adapter such as this

http://www.netgear.co.uk/wireless_networ鈥?/a>

or a PCI wifi card that will slot into a spare PCI slot in your PC such as this

http://www.netgear.co.uk/wireless_networ鈥?/a>

You would then need to set up a wireless network between your home-hub and the wifi adapter - here is a generic link to setting up

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/moredone鈥?/a>How do I get wireless internet on my computer?
if the computer does not already have wireless built in; you can either run a line from the hub to the computer or you can buy a wireless adapter for the computer and it should work that way.
link here
First and formost the computer across the house need to have a wireless card to get a wireless connection.

Or, you will have to run an ethernet cable to connect the far away computer.
You can get a wireless usb adapter that will plug right in to the external pc in the otherer room and be connected that way. They can be purchased for around 30 to 60 dollars Allot of the new desktops have wireless capabilities built in just so you know for future purchases.
I've got a wireless router for my laptop.

idk if that helps any.

How do wireless print servers work?

I would like to know more about wireless print servers. Do you have to have a wireless card in your laptop for it to work, and would you have to have a seperate wireless router to get wireless internet? How long does it take to set it up?How do wireless print servers work?
Yes, you need to have at least a wireless adapter for your computer.

It's easiest to set up if you have a router and wireless internet already, but can be set up without a router or wireless internet.

The time to set up depends on a number of things (including how well you know what you're doing) but I set up my D-Link DPR1260 in about 10 minutes. I have a Belkin wireless router and my computer already had wireless internet set up.

I won't lie, it's not as simple as just plugging it in - but I do think it's worth the time and effort in the end; in my experience the directions are fairly easy to follow if you take your time to read them fully. How do wireless print servers work?
Let's cover a few fundamentals:

A Local Area Network (LAN) links network devices (pcs, network printers, etc) together to share data under some sort of organized and controlled way.

A LAN can be totally wired, totally wireless, or a mix of wired and wireless.

LAN devices are therefore ';linked'; to each other via the LAN.

If the LAN also links to the Internet, a router is used to achieve the interface. (A router is also used if you have a point to point link between two LANS but that is beyond this topic).

A wired link requires a network switch where all the cables connected to LAN devices come together and link to the router. All pcs that link via wired link must have a wired network interface (RJ 45 port or wired network interface card).

A wireless link requires a wireless access point (often integrated into a router in small networks) that acts similarly to a network switch in that all wireless LAN devices come together at the access point. All LAN devices that link to the wireless access point must have a wireless network interface.

If you have a wired network printer it links to the network switch via a wired CAT5 cable. All LAN pcs configured to print to it, regardless of whether the pcs are wired or wireless can print to the printer. Similarly if you have a wireless printer (wireless print server), all LAN pcs configured to print to it, regardless of whether they are wired or wireless can print to the wireless printer.

If you have a wireless router on a small network, all wired and wireless LAN devices use the same router. If you have a router that does not have wireless capability, you can purchase a wireless access point and configure it on your network by linking it via wired line to the network switch and all wired and wireless devices use the same router.

The time it takes to set up depends upon the number of devices and your skill level. I can set one up in under 30 minutes if there are fewer than 5 wireless devices and all the wiring and equipment is in place.

Each wireless transmission must be secure or hackers will break in; security takes more time to configure but it is well worth it.
i have no idea!

How can i receive more connectivity from a wireless network?

I'm using my school's wireless internet( i'm using it legally because i'm the student of that school) and my apartment is near the school. I can get only one green bar and that's it. Although i can connect to the internet and stuff it disconnects from time to time and I'd like to increase the connectivity. I'm using a desktop and my wireless usb adapter is a wireless-g. I've heard that wireless-n adapters are better. What are my options? How can i receive more connectivity from a wireless network?
my opinion is, you need to hack your adapter. Do a search on homemade wifi antennas and that will give you some ideas. the antennas in those adapters are notoriously horrible for performance. my suggestion is to see if you can make a reflector you can attach your usb adapter to since the antenna is most likely built in. Use a USB extension cord to connect it to the computer, put the adapter in the reflector and point at your school. the reflector makes the signal directional and intensifies it, making both transmit and receive signal strengths better. Like a mini satellite dish. Check the link below. I've made these before and they work pretty good. nothing some postcard stock, glue and aluminum foil won't handle.

How do you disable the old wireless network when setting up a new wireless access point?

I have a Thompson wireless modem/router and it has a very poor range. I am planning on buying a wireless access point to boost the range. I was reading about how to install them and it says you have to disable the old router from broadcasting the network so the access point can do it. How do you disable the network? How do you disable the old wireless network when setting up a new wireless access point?
Don't know your specific router but this is done by turning off the broadcast SSID option in the router which announces it's presence. How do you disable the old wireless network when setting up a new wireless access point?
You have to log into Thompson router and disable the wireless. Turning off the SSID only, will still allow it to broadcast a signal, conflicting with the new wireless router/Access Point (AP).

If you cannot turn off the wireless on the original router, simply set the new AP to a different channel. Most wireless AP use channel 6. Try channel 1 or 11 with the new AP, and test your internet speed.

How exactly does wireless internet work?

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop and I am getting to the point where I'm needing to fly with and go to places with my laptop. I have ATT DSL at home. They just sent me a modem (I have one already) and two wireless cards, but they look like paper cards. I don't really know how exactly wireless internet works. Do I need another equipment? Please help! How exactly does wireless internet work?
First of all, place your SIM card (wireless card, the chip) onto the modem. Then you plug in the modem onto the USB slot available on your laptop. Once it is plugged in, on the screen of your laptop, it will usually prompt a browsing menu. This shows on the screen if the modem has a pre-installed software for browsing. Otherwise, an installation disk should be available in the modem package of yours.

Follow the instruction upon installing the software (either via the pre-installed or the disk). Once it is installed, your SIM card should also be able to get the signal. Press connect / dial and when you are on, use your internet explorer or browser application on your Dell to start browsing.

Just make sure that if your SIM card were a prepaid, the balance is sufficient.

Take care and dont forget to.. ENJOY!How exactly does wireless internet work?
In simple terms, you have two hardware devices that make up wireless connections. First, you have a Wireless Access Point or AP or WAP. A wireless access point is simply a wireless hub. An AP has antennas for sending and receiving the wireless signal to other wireless devices and it also has a cat 5 connection for connecting to the network.

The other device is a Wireless NIC. Wireless NIC's are manufactured for both desktop and laptop applications, however, the laptop NIC's are more popular. The wireless NIC's have a built-in antenna and it is also sends and receives signals. 802.11b/g devices send and receive at 2.4GHz.
Well, Wireless internet works this way; Your Wireless card sends our packages, it tries to find a wireless router. Most planes/airports/restaurants have Wi-fi, which is wireless internet, free. Your Wireless card will see that the airport has Wi-fi and will connect to it. Once your wireless card connects to the airport internet, it will start receiving internet, and then BAM, your good to go.
Your laptop should have a built in receiver if you cant connect check you computer for spyware : Pando, Gamevance, etc and uninstall it. In other words you need a wireless router in your home butnyou lap top should be able to pick it up freely
you will also have to buy a wireless router for your laptop to connect to the internet. In public places you can usually get free internet if your laptop detects the signals coming from wireless routers.

    Hi James,

As per the Microsoft Website (link below) the Steady Red Light means:

The adapter is ready to be connected to a wireless network.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/907602.

I would advice you to check if you have enabled any security on your Wireless Router due to which you are facing issues to connect.

In case this is not so, it may be possible that your adapter is faulty and may need to be replaced by the seller.

Update in case of any queries related to checking the router settings.

    Good Luck..

What is a wireless card for a laptop, and do you need to get some kind of wireless service for it?

My nephew is in the Army, and he wanted me to find him a laptop computer, but I don't understand how the wireless thing works. Some laptops come with wireless cards and some don't. I'm lost when it comes to laptops and what they need to work in the wireless capacity. Can someone please explain the wireless card thing to me and how it works? Thank youWhat is a wireless card for a laptop, and do you need to get some kind of wireless service for it?
ok basically like the other posters have said most laptops do come with wireless network cards inbuilt. Wireless means just like it says.....no wires... especially when you connect to the internet or a network. In your case you are purchasing a laptop...make sure on the spec list it displays wireless network card or optimized for a wireless network...this is good if you want to be mobile and not restricted to sitting down and having a telephone cable or network cable going to your laptop. What is a wireless card for a laptop, and do you need to get some kind of wireless service for it?
These days, all notebooks come with wireless. If you find one that doesn't, don't buy it. Since you are going to buy one WITH wifi, you don't need to worry about the rest.
Yes, most laptops today do come with wireless. This allows the user surf the Internet with out any cables.

How can check if somebody is using my wireless router?

I purchased a Wireless router, I am using the cat 5 from my wireless router to my PC therefore I am not using the wireless capabilities of my router. I would like to monitor the users of my routers? How can I find who is using my wireless router ? If I type ipconfig/all will it tell me who is using my router? How can check if somebody is using my wireless router?
    no, login to your router.

If you are using a netgear router, type in Routerlogin.com

and if it asks for password and stuff

    type

    ADMIN for the username

    password for the password.

Than it'll login to your router, it'll show a page with a whole bunch of

tabs, to the left there will be an option that you can press that says

ATTATCHED DEVICES, click that and it'll tell you wat computers

and devices are attached according to the computers name.

so if your neighbors computer is called, DANS-PC it'll say that name as the connected device.

If you dont want anyone logging onto ur router.

    add WEP or WPA security.

Refer to your router manual for instructions on how to do this.

It's a rather very simple process though,.

Hope this helpsHow can check if somebody is using my wireless router?
You can access your WiFi router on its IP address (for example http://192.168.1.1) and there must me a tab of connected peers.

How to create wireless and wired connection with one jack?

Hello, and thanks for reading my question:

Our family has dial up and one jack.

We have wired Internet, but we would like to also like to have wireless Internet. Our modem doesn't have another jack for our Linksys router. How can we have wireless and wired Internet? Do we need a dual Internet wire? Thanks, and sorry for the lack of information. How to create wireless and wired connection with one jack?
The thing is is that what you're doing is a little outdated, but nonetheless possible. You will need some discontinued equipment from Ebay.

Another way, but not as slick is to do it with software, setting one pc up as a server. The first link below describes how to setup Internet Connection Sharing in Windows. The wired computer must run for any of them to work though, but it's your cheapest option. You simply plug your phone wire into the modem plug on your computer. Then connect the computer LAN connection to your router. Not sure what router you got, but it may go into the ';WAN'; port. Now setup your network in';Ad Hoc Mode'; using the link below. How to create wireless and wired connection with one jack?
You buy a wireless router and plug the one ethernet jack from the modem to the router. Then most routers have more connections coming from the router that would be a wired ethernet cord that can go to a desktop or laptop computer
Plug the phone line from the wall into the router into the wan port then use another port on the router and plug a cable from there into the computer and you will have wireless and wired.

I have a wireless security camer on my home wireless network. How do I view it on a network away from home?

I have a linksys wireless routher at home and a trendnet TV IP200W camera. I can view it from any place at home with a password I set up and an IP I gave it on my router. Now how do I go out of home to another network and take a look at what is happening at home?I have a wireless security camer on my home wireless network. How do I view it on a network away from home?
I'm just assuming that on your network you hand out unroutable ip addresses (192.168.x.x) (10.x.x.x)...

The only real/routable ip address is the one connecting to your internet provider off your WAN port on your wireless router and that can change at anytime although it typically doesn't for a long period unless you reboot, etc.

You will have to setup port forwarding so that when you try and connect to the real ip at a specific port...it redirects to your camera.

This video should get you going but search for port forwarding for your specifc router.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWPUdW1kI鈥?/a>I have a wireless security camer on my home wireless network. How do I view it on a network away from home?
Your router may be preventing you from accessing the camera. You said that you gave your camera an IP address. I could be wrong but some internet cameras have programs that treat rthem as internet sites so that you can access them from outside your network providing you use the password that you have set.You may not directly be able to look at it because that would be a security problem. Check out the manufacturer of your camera to see if the offer a service, sometimes for free to access your camera from outside you network. Hope this helps.
    1) Look at the configuration of the camera and, if possible, choose an alternative port of, for example, 8000.

    2) Note down the IP address of the camera and then configure port forwarding on your router, so that port 8000 requests are forwarded from the router to the camera.

    3) Now, you have a couple of alternatives to gain access to your Internet facing IP address.

    a) You can subscribe to a dynamic DNS service, i.e. no-ip.com, or dyndns.com. This requires you to run a client on your home PC that updates the dynamic DNS server with your IP. The benefit of this is that, should your IP address change, it will be reflected at the dynamic DNS server. To access your router, you would type something like:-

    http://%26lt;name you choose%26gt;.no-ip.org:8000

This should show the web page on the camera's web server

    b) Get yourself a static IP. This will never change, even if your router restarts. The only issue is that you need to remember the IP address. It's not as easy as remembering the dynamic IP name you've assigned. You can still subscribe to a dynamic DNS service, it's just, kind of, defeating the object.

You would now type something like:-

    http://217.130.128.33:8000
Type in your wan ip address and set up port forwarding to your camera's ip address.

http://'; cameras ip address'; in the address bar of your web browser.

How do I make my Xbox 360 wireless using a wireless network and a router instead of the expensive Xbox adapter?

I have an Xbox 360 and wireless internet in my building. I do have a Linksys braodband router to use to make my Xbox wireless instead of buying the expensive Xbox wireless adapter. Any help please. Thank you!!How do I make my Xbox 360 wireless using a wireless network and a router instead of the expensive Xbox adapter?
The 360 must go online using something plugged into either the Ethernet or USB port on the back. That being said we can begin to narrow down our options: 1 if you want to get the most bang for your buck, you should do whatever you can to wire it directly to your router, it'll definitely give you the best performance. There are other devices that can receive a wireless signal much like the official Xbox360 wireless adapter does. Unfortunately, most of them are just as expensive as the official adapter is, and there's no guarantee that they;ll work. Your only other option then is something that does not technically use wireless, but doesn't require a direct line from the router...this is where it gets pretty specific. And this is pretty much your only other option. These things are called PoE adapters (Power over Ethernet) these things actually work pretty well. They come in two parts, the first part you plug from you router to any standard wall outlet. Then the device uses your buildings wiring to transfer the connection to the second device that is plugged in between your Xbox and another wall outlet. It works just like a wired connection, but without having to run new wiring. The problem here again: Cost. These run anywhere from $30-$100 depending on where you get them.

So sorry, but these are your only alternatives to just buying the wireless adapter (as far as I know). To review, your 3 options are: Wired (through a standard Ethernet cable, which will run you between $10 and $30 depending on length), wireless (which is less reliable and more pricey, but saves a lot of trouble) or Poe (which is more reliable than wireless, but just as expensive, and most models take up a power outlet, and it requires that you have direct access to your wireless router). Good luck! How do I make my Xbox 360 wireless using a wireless network and a router instead of the expensive Xbox adapter?
If you have a laptop: try this.

Connect the laptop too your xbox with some CAT 5 cable (eithernet cable).

then go to your control pannell on your laptop and make sure that it can share its connection with other computers. you should be able to connect then. plz best answer me
    uhm. . . I'm not sure. . . but i think this could help.

I have an Xbox360 too, and mii mom and i use an ethernet cable (itz likka yellow cord that you connect from the Xbox to the router).

I think it could work. If not, sorry. . .

I don't know that much about it.

    Sorry!

see this little link it has video guides i,e for installing extra devices

http://www.digidave.co.uk/setup_guides/v鈥?/a>How do you connect more than one wireless device to a wireless router?
That must have something to do with the DHCP part in the router. If you take up all of the addresses the router will create then that is that. So what you would need to do is get into the router ( most likely 192.168.1.1) and change the maximum number of addresses. By default most routers have a max of 50 addressess, so it doesnt make much sense if you can only connect a few at a time. If you check this out and it is set to 50, then try to reset the router and start from scratch. If that doesnt work, then it would sound like it's having a routing problem and may need to be replaced.

How do I hookup a wireless laptop and a wired desktop to my cable modem?

I have a brand new Dell laptop with a Dell 1370 Internal Wireless (802.11b/g, 54Mbps5) and an older desktop. I want to hookup the laptop wirelessly.

I know I need a router and a wireless access point. However, I would also like to have a firewall in there.

Do all routers have firewall protection in them?

Is there any type of firewall/ router wireless access point product on the market that has all three in one?How do I hookup a wireless laptop and a wired desktop to my cable modem?
I have a similar setup to what you are trying for, and I can tell you that (Sk8) Julien is incorrect: you don't need a host computer. Here's what to do.

Find a router that accepts both wired and wireless connections. There are many on the market; at the moment I'm using a Linksys WRT54G. It acts as a wired router, a wireless access point, and a firewall -- all for about US$50.

Using Ethernet cables or wireless connections as necessary, connect the boxes up this way:

[Cable modem] --%26gt; [Router] --%26gt; [Computers].

The router's setup should have a place where you tell it how to connect to the Internet. Enter your login information there. If you have been using client software to log into your cable connection from your computers, you will no longer do so, since the router takes care of the login. How do I hookup a wireless laptop and a wired desktop to my cable modem?
First All new wireless routers come with firewalls. second windows XP comes with a fire too. and third yes look at belken, and dag i forgot the others but there's a few out there.
Okay. For starters you are going to pic a host computer. A host computer is the computer that you are connecting to the cabel modem and router. For your laptop that already has a wireless card in it will read the signal from the network you set up. Your cable provider has a router organization thing that will only let you choose only the users you want by their mac address or physical address. To find the physical address type ipconfig in dos and it will look like this xx-xxx-xxx a litttle. You should be all set. If you need more help ask. And p.s. your router is the access point aswell as the firewall depending on how you set it up.
Most routers have built-in hardware firewalls. These are fairly simple and protect against basic attacks. For the setup you describe I suggest a firewall on each computer. XP has a built-in firewall, or you can use ZoneAlarm or something similar.

If you are setting up a wireless network, be sure you set up some form of encryption. Be sure you read up on the proper setup for a wireless network.

  • How can I know what kind of wireless card does my computer have?

I want to know how can I get the correct information about the kind of wireless card that my laptop has. I have one laptop that I bought old with a wireless card included, so I think it should be using a G wireless router, but my friend bought two laptops in different times, newer than mine, but still we don't know If they use N or G. How can I check in the system wich wireless already have included? ThanksHow can I know what kind of wireless card does my computer have?
    1. You can find out what type of card/chipset you have by going into the system properties.

Right click on My Computer | Click on Properties | Hardware | Device Manager | + next to Network Adapter. Then you can just look the card up on the Internet.

    2. If you are trying to decide what kind of wireless router to buy, go ahead and get the N it is backwards compatible. How can I know what kind of wireless card does my computer have?
Click start, then go to control panel, then click on network connections, you will see all your network adapters including wireless. If you click on view on the menu bar and select tiles, you will see BG or N in gray under the icons, telling you what speed you have.

    Sorry!

How much faster is a wireless bridge than a wireless network adapter?

I have a second PC that i want to use for gaming and other internet downloading things and I am not able to find any stats on the internet comparing a wireless bridge to a wireless adapter. How must faster is a bridge? How much slower is it than a hard wired connection? Thanks! How much faster is a wireless bridge than a wireless network adapter?
I'm not sure if you have your terms mixed up, or exactly what you're asking. but i'll try...

anything with ';wireless'; in the name relies on the speed of the wireless. a bridge usually connects to your computer over a wire, then ';beams'; the internet signal back to your main router via wireless. so the slowest point is the wireless part, so it doesn't matter how fast the wire is because you are limited to the wireless speed. If you are using wireless G standard the max speed is 54mbps, if you have really nice equipment and can use wireless N the max speed is 300mbps. Though your internet speed is probably 5mbps to 20mbps so really either of them is ok.

if you can run a wire, you can use GigabitEthernet which is 1gbps, or 1000mbps. or you can use FastEthernet which is way more common, at 100mbps.

wired networks are usually far faster and more stable than wireless networks. if you are using wireless and surfing along at a happy 54mbps then your cordless phone rings, someone turns on a microwave, or another laptop wants to hop on your wireless network, then your speeds will drop 50% or more. whereas if you are on the wired network, wired networks are not really affected by cordless phones or microwaves unless the cables are right next to them, and your router can easily provide fast speeds to more than one user, with a 5mbps connection 2 or 3 computers should be able to get online with no problem. and with a 20mbps connection you could run a small company. How much faster is a wireless bridge than a wireless network adapter?
Wired connection is more reliable than wireless. If you can connect your PC trhough wire without any problem then do it. But if it is difficult to lay a cable then go to a wrieless. Just make sure that you will place your PC where you could get a good signal from your wireless router...good luck...jexter@eastern.com.ph

yes, the router would have its subnet ';talkiing'; to the switches and the switches would have seperate subnets ';talking'; to their respective users. in other words, you must make the switches clients of the router subnet and the users clients of their respective switch subnets ..see manufacturers documentation for instructions on how to set up the router subnet and associated documentation to set up subnets and assign client addresses to the switches

How can I change my wireless internet connection to an Ethernet connection using my computer?

I use a wireless card to connect my desktop to the internet. I Also want to connect my ps2 in the same room to the internet. The router is to far away for it to be practical running a lan cable from it to the ps2. I am currently able to get one of my ps2 games online using ics on Windows XP and an extra lan card on the desktop but the other 2 games won't work. I know ics is not ideal for this and even with the Windows firewall off most of the ports the games use are blocked. My question is are there any programs that will fix this or better yet is there any boot disc that I can start my computer with (something linux based) that will make my computer a pass through using my wireless card and lan card? Then when I'm done pop the disk out, reboot, and start windows normally? Both cards are Realtek based, the wireless is an rtl8180 and the lan is a rtl8139c. Any ideas? How can I change my wireless internet connection to an Ethernet connection using my computer?
The easiest way would probably be to relocate your router. Other than that, it wont be easy without switching to linux on your desktop.

How do I connect my wireless router to my modem and my computer?

I have just bought a wireless router, because I want to connect my PS3 via a wireless connection. But, the ethernet port on the back of my computer is already being used by my modem. Do I need to connect both my modem and my wireless router to an ethernet port? Please help? How do I connect my wireless router to my modem and my computer?
on the router, there are maybe 5 rj45 jacks. they are marked 1 - 4 and uplink.

uplink goes to the cable/dsl modem.

1 - 4 go to your work stations. How do I connect my wireless router to my modem and my computer?
This is how it should work. Your wall cable should be plugged into the modem (in). Then connect your Wireless router(in) to the modem (out). If you have a desktop without wireless connection, connect the ethernet cable to the router (1,2,3,4..etc, any port will do). You will need to run the setup on your computer to configure the router. After setting up the router, your PS3 or other wireless devices should be able to find your wireless network and you can connect them without problem.
The modem connects to the router and only the router via an ethernet cable... you would then plug your computer to the router.

The PS3 will use the wireless off of the router with no cords (obviously)
You connect both the computer and the modem to the router.

    Josh,

Wireless phones operate on 3 frequencies: 900MHz, 2.4GHz, and 5GHz. The last two are the same as 802.11a/b Internet (WiFi). If changing the channel on your WiFi access point does not fix the problem (and it might not because most wireless phones jump from frequency-to-frequency across the 2.4GHz spectrum), I would recommend getting a WiFi access point that operates in a band different from your cordless phone (i.e. 5GHz if your phone is on 2.$GHz).

Hope it helps. How do i stop my wireless phone from interferring with my wireless internet?
Log on to the router and change the channel it is broadcasting on.
    What dfw2442 said.

The two system are likly using the same frequency. Try changing the channel it is on.
It will not do this if you keep the handset and base a reasonable distance from the wireless. More likely you do NOT have a DSL filter fitted to every telephone outlet with equipment connected as well as the one on the modem or router. This means any phone, answering machine, fax, analogue modem or satellite box.

Every time I connect my wireless home surveillance system I cannot connect to the internet. I have to unplug the power to the camera so that I can connect to the internet. The Lynksys is connected to the router and the camera to the wireless receiver. how can I fix this issue? How can I fix my wireless home surveillance system to not interfere with my Lynksys wireless access point?
Its not necessary to change the frequency - just the channel within the frequency. There are a total of 11 channels available. Its probably easier to change the linksys than muck around with the surveillance system. To get to the router, you just type its IP address into an internet browser's address line (probably best done with the security system off, or plugged in to the router with a cable to prevent getting kicked out!). Once you have logged into the router I believe for most linksys units you can find the settings for channel on the wireless tab at the top of the home page. Once changed and saved, restart the computer and scan for your wireless network. You should then be able to reconnect to your router's new settings. If you run into trouble, linksys' website www.linksys.com has help specific to each model and version number.

The answer upstairs is right. How can I get my computer to show wireless connections?
Well my guess for you here is that you have yet to install the drivers for the wireless adapter. If your computer come with a 'drivers cd' that will be the one we need to run to get this working for you. If you do not have a disk for this, then id recommend you go to a working computer and download the wireless driver from the manufacturers website, copy it to a flash drive, then install it to this computer.

The way to check if you need the drivers installed varies by which version of windows you have.

XP: click on [start]; right click on [My Computer]; select [properties]; a new window will open up select the [hardware] tab; select [device manager]; another window opens up any items that have a '; ! '; next to it need the drivers to be installed properly

Vista/Windows 7: click on [start]; right click on [computer]; select [properties] or [system properties]; a window opens up, and in the upper left had corner select [device manager]; your computer may ask for permission click [ok] or [continue]; another window opens up any items that have a '; ! '; next to it need the drivers to be installed properly

Those devices with the '; ! '; should have names that represent the item that they are. on some devices they will be much more vague and your best bet would be to install all the drivers for your model or if you notice something not working right then choose that driver.

    Hope this helps.... good luck.

How do I get my wireless router to work without ethrenet connected to my computer?

I have a Netgear DG834Gv2 wireless router and I managed to get it working as my modem via the ethrenet cable, but how do I get it to actually be wireless. My laptop has built in wireless. How do I get my wireless router to work without ethrenet connected to my computer?
it should already be broadcasting a signal. If its not, then look on the box for a switch. If there is none, see the users manual and try to change the router settings. Go to your browser and type in 192.168.x.x or 127.0.0.1 based on your manual to see how to access the settings. How do I get my wireless router to work without ethrenet connected to my computer?
First step, download the manual or open it up and find out how to change the settings. The router must be broadcasting the signal (thats 1 setting that has to be checked), and it may also be hidding the SSID from public view (another setting you need to check). IF you are sure that wireless is active, and you know the SSID, then you need to set up your laptop under the wireless connection to ';find'; the router via it's SSID. Windows will do this automatically in most cases.

For that router, the IP address is 192.168.0.1 Reset the device via the small pin hole in back (using paper clip or something) if you do not know the user name and password, then enter user name %26gt; ADMIN and password of %26gt; Password.

If you do not know the SSID, or if the SSID or signal is not set to broadcast, then you will need to hook up via ethernet

Another setting you may need to check is if the router is broadcasting in ';B'; or ';G';, and set the router according to your laptop's wireless card.
You have to call the Company name of your wireless router. i just spent 2 days with my mom trying to figure this out... They will give you the correct IP to connect through the Wireless router to your laptop.
Make sure the wireless connection in your laptop is active. Click ';start'; Then highlight ';connect to'; and then click ';show all connections'; Your lan connection and your wireless connection will then appear. It will say under them if they are disabled. If your wireless connection says disabled, then click the icon and select enable.

Okay I have one laptop and so does my brother. And we have a wireless router and modem and paying for highspeed internet.

    NOW,

Now the desktop doesnt work and i want to throw it away, Can i still get wireless internet w/out the desktop being plugged in? How do I do this? How can I connect wireless internet in my home with a laptop?
You need a router. If your laptop was getting Internet connection through your desktop, you were probably using Internet connection sharing. Routers are devices that share the Internet connection. It works much better with routers than piggy backing computers.

I know everybody likes to go wireless, but I highly recommend novice users stay away from it if you do not need to be 100% mobile. Check this video out: http://www.cnet.com/4520-7390_1-6274537-鈥?/a>

A lot of people don't understand that you can do this. It is really easy to setup. There is no problems with interference from wireless phones or even a neighbor's wireless. If your desktop isn't working and your laptops are still working it would seem to be that way. Take a look at the wiring.

If you can turn off the desktop and the laptops still get online wirelessly, you are all set.

If there is not a switch try to find the wireless indicator that looks like a tower on the key board. Most likely it is between F-1 and F-12 keys. If it is there, hold the ';Fn'; key down, placed at the lower left side of the key board, and press the key with the little tower on it.

If that fails, call HP and ask for guidance.

There's a switch between the top of the keyboard and the display - it should have a very dim blue light showing through the lines (check in a dark room). If not, press the button once and the light should come on. As long as your router doesn't have SSID Broadcast disabled, or wireless itself disabled, the laptop should find the signal. (If one or both of them are disabled you'll have to connect to the router with an Ethernet cable and enable it.)

How can I connect a wired printer to my wireless network using a wireless router?

I have a wireless network: a wireless modem connected to a DSL line that connects wirelessly to my computer. My printer has a wired ethernet port. I have a spare router with wireless capability that I could connect to this printer. Without wiring my printer to my modem (they are in different rooms), can I use this router to get my wireless printer to talk to my computer - either via the modem or directly to my wireless card in my compter - whatever is possible. Thanks! How can I connect a wired printer to my wireless network using a wireless router?
If you have a network printer you can get adapters that will convert a wired ethernet port in to a wireless solution. You can also get a wireless print server to connect the printer across the network with no PC needed.

Using the advice above, keep in mind the PC that you want to share the printer from must be on at all times or no one will be able to print. How can I connect a wired printer to my wireless network using a wireless router?
Yes and No. If you use the spare router with your printer, you will have 2 wireless networks. (Don鈥檛 make the mistake of setting both wireless routers with the same SSID, then nothing will work right.) You could do this, but then you would have to switch between both networks, depending on whether you want to print or be on the internet - pretty klugy and bothersome.

Some routers can act as a relay agent, but it not common. You would have to check the setup options. Your best bet would be to pickup a wireless print server.
Unless your printer will accept a wireless card it will not work...You can hard wire it to atleast one comptuer and share the printer on the network. Then every computer on the network can print from the same printer...Very easy to set up and you can find it on microsoft website for setting up a network printer...Thanks
    Go to Fry's Electronics store.

Ask two or three different knowledgeable sales people how to do this.

Buy at least two different ways of doing what you want with the understanding that if either does not work for you, you can bring it back.

I'm thinking about buying a laptop, and my old computer worked for wireless at my house, so what i'm asking will i need to buy any accessories to be hooked up to wireless, or do most computers automatically come with wireless connection? How do i get wireless internet on a laptop?
most laptops today come with a wireless adapter built in. be sure when choosing a laptop it does though. most operating systems today will automatically connect you to the strongest wireless network in range too so that wont be a concern, but sometimes they will be password protected and you will have to manually connect, password in hand, which is a more complicated, wireless router specific issue.

The other desktop if its not connected wirelessly they its easy. Just install the drivers for the printer on the desktop thats ethernet cabled to the router. Once installed go to start /settings then printers then on the printer in question right click it and go to sharing and share this printer on the network. But right click my computer/properties then computer name or the like and make sure all computers on the network share the same workgroup . By default MS windows uses the same name. But you can change it to any name you want to. All computers have to have the same workgroup name to share files and printers. Then on the other computer connected wirelessly go to start/settings printers and install new printer and it will ask if its a network printer or direct connect choose network printer and it wll install all thats needed. some printers can be hooked straight into your router via ethernet cable, if yours can (you would be able to tell by it having a jack on the back of it that looks like a big phone jack), just plug it into your router and you should be able to access it from any computer on the network. if your printer doesnt have that then you would have to do a few more steps, first set your priinter up to your main desktop computer. once it is set up go to your printer settings and right click the f380 and go to properties. click the sharing tab and select the box that says share over network. after this is done you should be able to access it from any other computer on your network. good luck

You'll want to use another computer and a USB Flash Drive to visit your laptop manufacturer's website. Search around the website for your model of laptop (model information can be found on the bottom of the laptop written on a sticker). You'll want to find the drivers and downloads page for that exact model of laptop, and download the driver for your WLAN adapter (may also be called Wifi, Wireless, Radio, etc). Once you've downloaded it to your USB Flash Drive, you can move it over to your laptop, install it, restart, and then you should be pretty much good to go.

I don't think the Netgear will do that as it is, you will need to replace the firmware with a linux based firmware such as DD-WRT http://www.dd-wrt.com BUT check the hardware compatibility list to make sure your exact model and version are listed. Also, follow the installation instructions exactly, or you could ';brick'; your router and it will be garbage.

After that, you need to set it up as a repeater bridge.

This isn't for newbies, you could easily do some damage to the router.

How does built-in wireless connection work in a laptop?

I understand that I can get wireless internet connection if my laptop has a built-in wireless card for as long as I'm in a ';hotspot'; where I get connection from radio waves. How true is that? I am planning to get a laptop, but I'm not sure if where we live now is actually a ';hotspot'; or not where I could use it for regular web surfing? We do have broadband internet for our desktop now, but I don't want to have a wireless router connected to that as it is connected to my work/company's computer, I trust wired network better for that. If there is a DSL or Cable internet provider in our area, will that give a big possibility that I will be able to get good signal for the laptop's wireless internet connection? Where do built-in wireless cards get their signals anyway? Is it possible that I will be getting a signal from other people's wireless connection? Can anyone explain this to me? I'm all confused. Thanks a lot!How does built-in wireless connection work in a laptop?
It is true you can connect to the Internet with radio waves. Hotspot however is a term used for an actual company. Hotspot cost money to use. You can pay monthly or pay-as-you go. Once you have an account with them you can use their Internet at Starbucks, airports and other various places (where Hotspot is offered).

Now besides hot spot there are other ways you can connect via wireless. The easiest way is with a router. You already said you don't want to use a wireless router, but actually you can connect any computer to the router via ';wired'; or ';wireless';. Almost all routers have 4 ports for Ethernet and x amount for wired connections. If you connect a computer through the wired ports it would be just as secured as a computer connect straight to the broadband modem. The Internet is never %100 secure by the way.

The other way you can connect with your wireless connection is by searching for open connections. An open connection is a connection that is unsecured and requires no authentication to connect. If your neighbors have a router and no security, then you can connect to the Internet through their router. If you connect using an open connection it is no fault but the person who owns the connection. I had a neighbor across the street connecting to my router so I had to specify that my router would only serve the Internet to my notebook. That worked and now no one but me can connect to my router. Secure and wireless. How does built-in wireless connection work in a laptop?
your laptop will automatically pick-up any available wireless connection that reaches its range - yes you can get online using your neighbor's wireless internet connection as long as your laptop picks up the signal. check out your local cable or dsl internet provider so you can set up your own wireless network.
You must have a router or be in range of a network that is unprotected. You are not likely to find one these days. The hot spots you refer to are airports, wifi cafes, etc. These things have limited range and connectivity without a booster. Short answer: get a wireless router and protect it. The literature will explain how.

How do I get skypeout and wireless internet on my ipod touch?

Ok, basically what I want to do is start using my ipod touch as a cell phone.

I want to use skype to call people and text them, even people that don't have skype and just have regular phones and cell phones.

I want to do it from anywhere, not just where the ipod touch picks up hot spots.

The big thing I'm wondering here is, is there a thing that I can do, download, buy, for my ipod touch that makes it so I always have an internet connection no wonder where I am?

Also, will using this work nicely or is there another way to do something like this for cheap? How do I get skypeout and wireless internet on my ipod touch?
    HAHAHAHAHA.....

No. you need a hotspot to use skype. You can get an iphone and use the 3g as skype.

  • How do I do this for Fedora Core 3?

So I burned an image of fedora core 3 to a disk. Then I installed it onto a partition on my drive. That's fine. I cannot get the linux connected to the internet. I have no idea how to do this and keep getting repomd.xml errors. Repository or something. I'm very confused as to how to set up the network. i have enabled wired and wireless connections. How do I do this for Fedora Core 3?
If this was ubuntu, i would plug in to your network with a cord, and then go to system -%26gt;Administration -%26gt;hardware drivers. you can then install any drivers you need, reboot and your are set.

Fedora has been problematic for me.

fedora is the open source experimental version of redhat linux. centos is the stable version of redhat, i might try that - or go for ubuntu (i'm using it right now). How do I do this for Fedora Core 3?
Can you connect wired (with an ethernet)? Can you pick up any wireless networks?? If not, then it may be the drivers for the wireless card is not availible. And the repomd.xml error comes because you cannot connect to the internet and yum is trying to update.

Also, try upgrading to a newer version of Fedora; Fedora 13 is now out and maybe your problems will be solved!
Open a terminal and try pinging a popular website.

    ping yahoo.com

If it works, you can reach out to the internet. If it doesn't, try pinging an ip.

    ping 8.8.8.8

If it works, your DNS isn't working. cat /etc/resolv.conf to see if the NetworkManager set up the DNS. If pinging ip doesn't, try pinging the localhost to see if the nic is working.

    ping localhost
